FAQ’s
Q: Why did I get a letter about Property Taxes or Tax Assistance?
A: You got the letter because we want to help! Tax Care for North Carolina is a local group that helps people who might be behind on their property taxes and don’t know what to do next. If you got a notice from the county saying you owe property taxes, it can feel scary, but don’t worry—there are ways to handle it. We can help you figure out solutions so you don’t lose your home. This letter is just our way of reaching out to let you know we’re here and that you’re not alone. There might be more options available to you than you think!
Q: Who are you?
A: We’re Tax Care for North Carolina, a local team of friendly people who know a lot about property taxes and how to help folks in tough situations. We started out because we saw too many people in our community lose their homes without knowing they had other choices. It wasn’t fair, and we wanted to change that! So, we created Tax Care for North Carolina to make sure people know there’s help available, and they don’t have to go through it alone. We’ve helped lots of families keep their homes and hope to do the same for you!
Q: Where are you located?
A: We’re right here in the community! Our mailing address is PO Box 1663 Carrboro NC 27510. But we don’t have a physical office you can walk into because our team mostly works from home. This helps us respond to people faster and keep our costs low, so we can help more families. Even though we don’t have a big office, we’re still here to support you and are always just a phone call or email away!
Q: Are you real estate agents?
A: No, we’re not real estate agents, and we’re not asking to list or sell your house. Our job is to help people who are worried about losing their homes due to unpaid property taxes. We want to give you other options, it’s about giving you more choices!
Q: Why did I get this letter?
A: You got this letter because the county probably sent a notice saying you have unpaid property taxes. We know it can be really upsetting to receive something like that, and it’s not always clear what your options are. That’s why we’re reaching out to let you know there’s help available. We specialize in finding ways to help people keep their homes, even if they’ve already received a notice about a tax sale. You don’t have to feel stuck or like you’re out of options—there may be things we can do to help!
Q: What happens when I call you?
A: When you call us, we take some time to learn about your situation and see what options we can offer. We understand everyone’s situation is unique, so we’ll ask a few questions about your property and what you’re hoping to achieve. After we review everything (which usually takes 24-48 hours), someone from our team will call you back to discuss your choices, like:
Standing Cash Offer: This is an offer to buy your property at a fair price, sometimes even above the market value! If you accept, it could pay off all your unpaid taxes and leave you with extra money instead of losing your home at an auction.
Tax Voucher: This is a special voucher that covers part of your unpaid taxes without you having to pay it back. It’s a great way to get some immediate help without adding more debt.
Short-term Loan or Leaseback: This option involves paying off your taxes so your home is safe from a tax sale. Depending on your situation, you might qualify for a short-term loan, or you could lease back your home while working on long-term solutions.
Grass Cutting / Trash Removal: Sometimes, counties charge extra fees for things like overgrown lawns or trash build-up. We can help with that too, at no cost to you, so you don’t have to worry about those extra charges.
All we need are a few details to get started. Once we know more, we’ll get back to you to discuss the options that might work best!
Q: Do you pay all of my past-due property taxes?
A: We wish we could help everyone completely, but we have a limited amount of resources. That’s why we do our best to prioritize people on a first-come, first-served basis. Sometimes, we can help pay all of your taxes, but other times, we might only be able to help cover part of it. The goal is to find a way to protect your home and keep it out of a tax sale. We’ll always do our best to help as much as we can!
Q: What is your role?
A: I’m a Tax Care Advocate. My job is to talk with people like you, learn about what’s going on, and then share that information with our team so we can create a plan. I don’t make the final decisions, but I make sure your case gets in front of the right people who can help. We usually get back to everyone within 24-48 hours because we know time is important. My job is to make the whole process as smooth and easy as possible for you!
Q: Why do you need my property information if the county already has it?
A: Good question! The county might have some basic information, but they don’t always have all the details. We want to be sure we know exactly what’s going on so we can offer you the right solutions. The county sometimes makes mistakes or misses things, so by confirming your information, we can be extra sure that we’re giving you the best options and avoiding any surprises down the road.
Q: Where do you get the money to pay my taxes?
A: We work with trusted local professionals who want to help families in our community. These partners provide funds and resources that we can use to help cover unpaid taxes. Since we have a limited amount of money, we do our best to help as many people as possible on a first-come, first-served basis. There’s no catch or hidden agenda—we just want to help people avoid losing their homes!
A: My goal is to help people avoid losing their homes. I want to provide information and support, so you have a choice in what happens next. It’s really rewarding when I can help someone keep their home and feel more secure. If we can find a solution that works for you, that’s the best outcome for everyone! Let’s work together to find the right option for you.
